You’ve heard of Paul McCartney, right? The Cute One. A little on the sentimental side (Silly Love Songs). He’s kind of a high profile guy, so I must be the last person on earth to learn he’s been releasing experimental albums for years as The Fireman. Last year’s was Electric Arguments, and it’s pretty fun. You’d have to say it’s more interesting than great, but it’s a reminder that the later Beatles played around with sound collage too (number nine, number nine).
You can’t divorce McCartney from melody, of course, and some of this, like Traveling Light is just lovely. Being Paul, he tends to gush at times, but his voice is identifiable, even when buried in the mix or electronically distorted. Maybe experimental isn’t the right description here. He’s been doing this sort of thing for decades, and knows what he’s up to. It should also settle any questions about whether Sir Paul still gets high. If you miss Pink Floyd or late-Beatles psychedelia, this is worth a listen.
